Abstract:

Speciation is believed to have occurred in the soils of London (UK), whereby a new genetically distinct anecic soil dweller DISCWORM (Lumbricus discii) has been found - and heard - in various locations and frequencies. Research has attempted to verify that Lumbricus discii is unable to breed functionally with the ubiquitous common earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris), however DISCWORM has become notoriously effective at escaping controlled lab conditions; rigorous data is therefore difficult to ascertain. Niche compartmentalisation has yet to be evidenced through hypervolume modelling, but this can be assumed due to DISCWORM's ability to produce a wide range of sounds and noises (a behaviour not found in any other species within the Lumbricus genus). These sounds are able to travel large distances with high intensity throughout various soil mediums, although the ecological function of these sonic capabilities is still unknown.

Key Words: DISCWORM, Lumbricus discii, Lumbricus, Speciation, Soil
